Iran Khodro
(or Iran Khodro Industrial Group) is a major Iranian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran) industrial manufacturer; khodro means "automobile" in Persian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persian_language). The company manufactures cars for the domestic and export markets. Founded in 1962 by two brothers, Ahmad and Mahmoud Khayami (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahmoud_Khayami), Iran Khodro was originally called "Iran National" before the 1979 Islamic Revolution (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iranian_Revolution).
Iran Khodro produces Iran's first national car, the Samand (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samand), which is based on the Peugeot 405 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peugeot_405) platform. The firm has a long-term relationship with PSA Peugeot Citroën (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PSA_Peugeot_Citro%C3%ABn), and assembles a number of Peugeot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peugeot) models under licence from the French (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/France) firm. It also makes trucks and buses under license from Mercedes-Benz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz).
For more than 3 decades, Iran Khodro produced the Paykan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paykan), (a version, developed over its life, of the Rootes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rootes) Group's Hillman Hunter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillman_Hunter)). This car became an iconic figure in Iran and single-handedly pulled the Iranian automobile industry from the edges of bankruptcy in early 1990s.
Paykan's production was discontinued in 2005, almost thirty years after the end of Hillman Hunter production in Britain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom). A pick-up (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pickup_truck) version is still in production.

Iran Khodro is the largest automotive producer in the Middle East (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_East), Central Asia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Asia) and North Africa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Africa) regions, with an annual production of around 1,000,000 various vehicles including cars, buses, trucks and pick-ups. This figure also places it as the 20th biggest automotive producer globally.
In a joint-venture with Daimler-Chrysler (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daimler-Chrysler), Iran Khodro is soon to start production of sophisticated 900-class Mercedes-Benz engines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internal_combustion_engine); one of its directors stressing that the company will export Iran-made engines to Germany (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany).

Samand is Iran (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran)'s national car, manufactured by Iran Khodro (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran_Khodro) (IKCO) using local manufacturers for its parts.

The Samand is built on the Peugeot 405 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peugeot_405) platform, using the "XU7JP/L3" engine amongst others. The Peugeot 405 is also in production in Iran, along with a facelifted version, the Peugeot Pars. Iran Khodro's relationship with the French company PSA Peugeot Citroën (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PSA_Peugeot_Citro%C3%ABn) began when they supplied XM7 engines (used in the Peugeot 504 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peugeot_504)) along with the drivetrain for some models of the Paykan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paykan),which itself was based on the Hillman Hunter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillman_Hunter). IKCO manufactures 80% of Samand's parts domestically.
From 2007, IKCO uses Iranian developed enigines like dual-fuel national enigine for his new models. The German (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany) company Bosch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bosch) has also shown interest in assembling the Iranian engine under license.
