IN TURKEY THERE IS STILL VIOLATION OF WOMEN'S RIGHTS AND THE
RIGHTS OF MINORITIES:
G overnment forces brutally suppressed a demonstration for women's
rights this year. 20 million Kurds have been still denied a national minority status
VIOLATION OF FUNDAMENTAL FREEDOMS OF THE INDIVIDUAL
INCLUDING FREEDOM OF WORSHIP:
Turkish custom and religious law do not grant an equal position to
women and men Turkey has repeatedly banned the opening of Christian schools; Christian churches are being expropriated and disallowed renewal
PECULIAR VALUES, CUSTOM AND RELIGIOUS LAW:
Authoritatively adopted laws cannot change the values and customs of
Turkish citizens In 2004, Turkey attempted to criminalize adultery; in the end, it did not become an offence, but only due to the EU's pressure
DENIAL OF TURKEY'S OWN PAST:
Turkey has never admitted the genocide of 1 million Armenians in 1915.
Since 1974, Turkey has been occupying Cyprus and has not explicitly
recognized the sovereignity of the Republic of Cyprus - an EU member
country
TURKISH IMMIGRANTS DO NOT INTEGRATE INTO EUROPEAN SOCIETY:
Shotgun weddings and honour killings are not the only problem of the
Turkish communities in Germany, France and the Netherlands. During the past 6 months, six Turkish women in Berlin have been killed by their own
families for refusing to live in marriages they have been forced into.
Turkish immigrants create closed ghettos, often not speaking the
language of the host country. With Turkey, further problems and dissimilar values enter Europe as well.
AFTER THE ACCESSION, TURKEY WOULD BECOME THE MOST
POPULOUS COUNTRY OF THE EU.
WILL THE EU GIVE IN TO TURKISH PRESSURE? :
The Prime Minister Erdogan has been jailed for his militant Istamic
statements. He considers democracy a temporary tool for reaching his
goal.
Among other things, he recited on a public meeting: 'The mosques are
our barracks, the domes our helmets, the minarets our bayonets, and the
faithful our soldiers.'
DO YOU REALLY WANT THIS UNPREDICTABLE NEIGHBOUR TO CO-
